Conclusion

The addition of low molecular weight heparin to intermittent pneumatic compression reduced the risk of venous thromboembolism from 3.6 to 0.6 per cent (P=0.008) in this study that included 682 procedures. It did, however, also increase the risk of bleeding complications: 9.1 versus 1.2 per cent, P<0.001.
