Conclusion

Eighty-eight patients with painful chronic pancreatitis were included and followed for 18 months. Patients randomized to early surgical drainage procedures had less chronic pain (P=0.02). Complete or partial pain relief was experienced by 58 per cent after surgery versus 39 per cent in controls, P=0.01.
