Conclusion

This multicenter study included 588 patients with complicated appendicitis. There was no significant reduction in superficial infections by delayed closure (10 per cent versus 7.3 per cent for primary wound closure). Postoperative pain, duration of hospital stay and quality of life were also similar. Delayed closure was $60 more expensive.
