Conclusion

A total of 2003 patients in intensive care were randomly allocated pneumatic compression in addition to low molecular weight heparin for thromboprophylaxis. There was a non-significant reduction in venous thromboembolic complications: relative risk 0.93, 95 per cent confidence interval 0.6 to 1.44, P=0.74.
