Conclusion

This analysis included 57 RCTs involving 5697 procedures across five surgical specialties, the largest being orthopaedics. A single dose of tranexamic acid reduced mean estimated blood loss by 153ml (95 per cent confidence interval 119 to 188ml) and the need for blood transfusion by two thirds (odds ratio 0.28, 0.22 to 0.36). Thromboembolic events were not increased.
